    Hi!
I’m having a lot of trouble with every waistband that isn’t using some form of elastic. Every skirt pattern, commercial or drafted by me, never works and there are so many patterns that require a zipper and hook that I’d love to make but nothing fits or is working for me. I’m kind of desperate at this point

I have a steep curve in my waist. My natural waist is 24.5″ but just 2″ down a little under my belly button it’s at 27″ and by the time I reach my pelvic bone it’s at 30.5″ so there is a six inch curve in a short amount of space on my body. I’ve drafted an angled back to try to bring the zipper in as the curve of my waist goes in but it’s always too big or gaps in the back. I’ve noticed as I measure myself a natural tendency for the tap measure to try to go high on my back and lower on my stomach. I have to almost fight it to stay level across my waist at any point of my torso from the natural waist down to my hip bone. Pants will hold the waist normally from the hips (33″) but always with a gap in the back.

Is there anyway I can draft a waist band that won’t slide up my waist, become to big or gap so that I can finally make skirts?
Thank you so much. I hope I made sense of this. Someone told me I might have “sway back” but I’ve had no other feed back or success.

sorry for the delay in response. My computer broke last week and I finally got a new one and now I’m just getting caught up. As I was reading your post, I started thinking that this might be a swayback adjustment as well. I don’t think it’s a waistband issue as much as it’s a fit issue with the garment itself and if you fix that, then the waistband will probably work better. We don’t have any tutorials yet on this type of alteration but this seems to be a pretty good video on fixing a skirt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7JzvzIkz1o and here’s an article on pants: https://www.sewalongs.com/clover/clover-swayback-adjustment let me know if it works out better for you 🙂

    Thank you so, so much!
I really appreciate your response, thank you for the time to help me resolve this. I’ve looked more at the swayback and it does seem to be a culprit. From my bottom rib to my pelvic bone is about 6″ long and within those 6″ I have another 6″ curve so I wind up with a 32″ bust, 24-25″ waist and by the time I hit my pelvic bone it’s at 30″ and the pelvic bones themselves are “pointy” though they don’t visibly stick out they visibly make my pants and skirts hard to fit as they “kick up” the waist of skirts and pants to my much smaller waist line

Before I looked into swayback I tried doing a half inch bias binding on skirt just to eliminate the width of the waistband while still finishing the raw edge as well as add a zip. I did this with your circle skirt tutorial and this actually did work with very minimal movement of the skirt at the waist but I will be looking more at these video’s you’ve suggested on how to fit things because I do love the look of a wider waistband. Pants will be a whole new obstacle but I’m learning so much! Thank you again. I love your site and your videos are always so helpful. I generally make children’s clothing but as I’ve moved into adult your advice and videos have been fabulous
