Please can you help me interpret my machine manual! I have a Janome 525S and I am worried about tension. I am trying to loosen the needle tension but I don’t understand how to do it. I reproduce a section of the manual.

The manual suggests that if the top thread it too tight, then I should loosen the needle thread tension. However, the diagram shows an arrow pointing upwards from 3 to 4. Logic tells me to drop the number from 3 to 2. What would you do please?

Hmmmm…yeah, I’m with you. I don’t know why their arrow shows the opposite. If it’s too tight, use a lower number and too loose use a higher number. The best way is to take a scrap of fabric from your project and just experiment with the tension until it looks good. You’re not going to hurt anything and it’ll get you more comfortable using your machine. When I’m starting out with a new fabric, I usually start at 5 and then either go up and down from there. good luck!
