I have a McCall’s pattern that is a multi-age pattern for children. At the top of the skirt portion, it shows markings & gives you the line to shorten it to the proper length per age. There is also a shortening line about 3/4 down the pattern for shortening, but it doesn’t give you the amount to shorten it. I don’t understand that, is it for you to determine the length of the hem? Thank you.

Well, on the pattern envelope or the pattern itself it might list a finished garment measurement for length. This will give you an idea on how long the garment will be if you use their suggested hem measurement. You can choose to hem it up any length that you wish after the garment is created or if you know how much you need to shorten from the finished garment length, you can decide to shorten the actual pattern before you cut it out. Hope this helps.
