what stitch is best to sew stretch mesh?

I have a formal dress that needs hemming, it is a stretchy mesh …if I use a straight stitch then the stretch goes out of the hem.

It really depends. I’ve used just a regular straight stitch to hem knit before but the hemline was more flowy and not tight fitting so there wasn’t really a need for it to be stretchy. If you do need it to be stretchy, you can use a narrow zigzag stitch on your sewing machine. If you want to do something by hand that won’t really be seen on the right side of the garment, consider doing the catch stitch.
