zipper fly

Thank you for the video tutorial on how to make a zipper fly. I have a question. Why do we need a zipper fly? I usually use invisible zippers. So far it looked good on the garments, but I haven’t made any pants with zippers yet. I was under the impression that the fly is used to hide the zipper, however if I’m using an invisible one, I should be able to just sew it on the pant leg itself. Am I missing something?

I believe it’s just a matter of style. Since you’re the one sewing, you can do whatever you want and when I make pants, I sometimes put the zipper in a side seam or in the back. I think though if you make something that looks like a traditional pair of jeans, it’ll seem a little odd without that zipper fly…but just because that’s what we’ve come to expect.
