Since we've started this site, I've been asked quite a few times on what a beginner needs to even get started in sewing. This is understandable because, if you're taking up this hobby for the first time, all the information can be quite overwhelming. To make things a little bit easier for new sewers, we've created this tutorial to point you in the right direction of basic supplies you should have on hand before getting started. We go over the types of sewing tools you'll need to purchase and also briefly talk about irons and sewing machines. Once you get into sewing, you'll be sure adding to your collection as there are all kinds of tools to meet different sewing needs, but this is showing you the bare minimum of what you need.
We don't go over thread, fabric, or patterns, because once you have the basics, it'll be up to you to pick your first project and, with that project, there will be an additional requirement of supplies needed for it. But we hope, at the very least, this will help get you on the correct path. If you're interested in starting with patterns, check out one of our many pattern tutorials for some step by step help that will surely get you on your way.
Was clueless about the marker/chalk when I started! Derp!
Do it, Ellie! 🙂
do you want to do alterations or design your own line? For the former, start advertising to friends, family, craigslist. Even if you give pals a discount at the beginning, charge something so you start adding value to your work and can start building a clientele. If you want to start designing, then start making things and create a portfolio. Volunteer to make something unique for a cousin’s prom or whatever and take pictures of anything you make. If you’re good, the word will spread. don’t give up! 🙂
I want to start my own dressmaking business from home but haven’t a clue where to start
I want to start my own clothes brand 😀
Just stumbled upon your site yesterday via a YouTube video. Your videos are very informative and I’m looking forward to learning to sew. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
yay! I’m glad you found us and I hope you enjoy our tutorials 🙂
Yay, I was on the verge of buying an online course in a ‘sale’.
Now I don’t need to. I can learn for free like I would from a family or friend.
Thanks.
yay! I love to hear this. I hope your daughters love it 🙂
Thanks so much for this site! My daughter has been wanting to sew. (She’s constantly cutting fabrics and taping them together in different ways.) We bought her a tiny starter sewing machine, but I have NO idea how to use it. So now we’re going to learn together! And maybe her little sister will get interested too!
