Beginner’s Sewing Tools

Beginners Sewing ToolsSince we've started this site, I've been asked quite a few times on what a beginner needs to even get started in sewing.  This is understandable because, if you're taking up this hobby for the first time, all the information can be quite overwhelming.  To make things a little bit easier for new sewers, we've created this tutorial to point you in the right direction of basic supplies you should have on hand before getting started.  We go over the types of sewing tools you'll need to purchase and also briefly talk about irons and sewing machines.  Once you get into sewing, you'll be sure adding to your collection as there are all kinds of tools to meet different sewing needs, but this is showing you the bare minimum of what you need.

We don't go over thread, fabric, or patterns, because once you have the basics, it'll be up to you to pick your first project and, with that project, there will be an additional requirement of supplies needed for it.   But we hope, at the very least, this will help get you on the correct path.  If you're interested in starting with patterns, check out one of our many pattern tutorials for some step by step help that will surely get you on your way.

I hope you do inherit it because Bernina’s are excellent machines even if they’re old. In fact, I learned how to sew on my mom’s old Bernina. 🙂 Just make sure that you take it in to a dealer yearly to be serviced and it should continue to work well for you. I know that learning how to sew can be overwhelming, but it is a very rewarding hobby and I’m so glad to hear that you’re wanting to take it up. If you’re unsure on where to get started, check out our sewing classroom tab at the top of our site. We try and sort the videos here from simple concepts to the more advanced. Also, if you’re logged in, you can check off when you’ve seen a tutorial and then the classroom will only list tutorials you haven’t seen. I think once you discover what type of sewing you enjoy, the you can start focusing on getting better in that area. Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress! 🙂

I want to learn to sew. I am a single guy who one day hopes to marry and hopes to have a wife with some sewing skills but I would like some too. I want to learn to mend or alter my own clothes and even to make my own and for loved ones. I would even go so far as to want to make curtains and other things for the home. I want to make time to learn and want to be realistic so some feedback would be great on how to start learning and what a typical project time frame is. I have bought books and check out some youtube videos (your professor pincusion of course) and can do some hand sewing and I am vaguely familiar with with a machine but not experience. My Mom is letting me use an old Bernina that is all mechanical. No computer parts. I am not sure if I will inherit it so some advice on a good sewing machine for my needs would be appreciated.
