Finish Seams

amsDo you look at your seams and think there must be something else you can do to make them look prettier?  Making you're own clothes are fun, but sometimes you don't want your things to look homemade and instead strive for professionalism.  If you're the type of person who wants the inside of the garment to look as nice as the outside, then you'll want to check out this tutorial.  We demonstrate different ways you can finish your seams with your sewing machine.  While an overlock or serger is used on most commercial garments for seam finishing, it doesn't mean you still can't have nice seams even if you only have a sewing machine.  The nice thing is that there are many different options for seam finishes so you can experiment and choose your favorite.  Some of these techniques work better on some fabric than others, so I highly recommend practicing on a scrap so you can decide which one looks best.  Once you learn to finish your seams, nothing will stop you from showing off all sides of your handmade garment.

    Hi,
When you use a zig zag stitch or overcast stitch. Do you also need to do the straight stitch first as you have done here? (ie. in minute 3.36 you have a straight stitch and then you do the zig zag.
    From a very beginner sewer.
    Thanks in advance.
