If you're sewing a jacket, chances are you will not do a traditional hem at the bottom. Most jackets tend to be lined and so this helps finish the raw edges but your jacket may also have a hem band. What is it? A hem band is a separate strip of fabric, either as one long strip or a strip with seams in it, which you'll find at the bottom of your garment. It's kind of like a cuff on a larger scale. Because both the outer fabric and lining have a hem band, there will not be regular hem as this takes care of it. It, also, will normally have interfacing attached to make it more stabilized. This video will show you exactly how it's done.
