Newborn Baby Onesie

Newborn Baby OnsieThere's a new baby in town and you want to make them something special.  How about making them a handmade baby onesie?  How fun would it be to be able to choose your own fabric.  Plus, this project is quick and easy.  After you finish, you'll be inspired to make another, because a newborn can't have too many new onesies.  Along with our step by step tutorial, we also provide you with a free pattern.  Please note, the size of this pattern is newborn but you can always adjust it for other sizes as well.  Also, be sure to use knit fabric as it's important to be stretchy and that you prewash your fabric before cutting out your fabric.  For an extra professional looking detail, we show you how to add individual snaps.  Are you ready to make a newborn baby onesie now?  Let's do it!

The best way to get your pattern is downloading on a non-mobile device. That way you can print it easily. I’m glad you’re eager to get started. 😀

Thank you so much for posting this! I’m learning how to make polymer clay baby dolls and need a way to dress them. I’ve only sewn a few items in my life and have a hard time understanding patterns. This was so nice and clear and easy to follow along with. I shrunk the pattern by 50 percent to get a doll sized onesie, and I used an old Tshirt as practice material. I’m so proud that I finished it all, except for the snaps (I have to buy some). I think next time I’ll try it again with nice fabric. I need to shrink it more, too, as it was still bigger than what I’m making (4-10 inch dolls).

I used a zig zag stitch for the seams. I don’t think premade bias tape is going to be stretchy enough so I wouldn’t recommend using it. I purchased my fabric at JoAnn’s in the baby knit section. Thanks! 🙂

When we are sewing in the sleeves and sewing down the sides, are we using the zig zag stitch or a straight stitch? Also, can pre-made bias tape be used instead of the knit fabric? Where did you get your fabric? It doesn’t seem to roll, at all! Thanks!

Can you tell me the name of the tool you used to put on the snaps. I would like to purchase one.
