A running stitch is basically a basting stitch that you do by hand. Because the stitches can be quite large, you can do it fairly easily and quickly. It's used to make quick seams, to tack things together, or even to create a gather.

Thank you!! I have been sewing (learning) about a year and never knew some of the absolute basics that you are covering. Who knew the strawberry was to sharpen your needle and ball point needles were for knits!!
