A seam ripper is a small sewing tool with a point used to pick stitches and a sharp curve that acts as a cutter.  It is used in removing stitches, usually because a mistake has been made, to take fabric pieces apart, or to remove temporary stitches. Despite its name, there's no actual ripping involved, but rather stitches are picked apart or cut. While seam ripping can be an annoying and time consuming task, it is a one that is inevitable and everyone should own this tool regardless of your sewing skills.
