It may just be me, but I don't think you can really go wrong when it comes to vintage fashion.  The lines in this dress are absolutely classic for the the 1940's and even though it's a style that doesn't show much skin, it's extremely flattering and still sexy.  There are so many great details to this dress.  You have the decorative buttons, the gathering in the front, the pleats in the skirt.  Wearing this dress will surely get the wearer a lot of compliments.

What I love about Simplicity pattern 1777 is that it isn't a modern pattern with some vintage elements.  This pattern is actually one of their 1940's patterns that they have reprinted with the added ease of modern sizes and modern directions.  So now any one of us can easily replicate this amazing dress without dealing with the vintage, and possibly fragile, original pattern.  It really is the best of both worlds.

What I also like is that you really have several options in making this retro dress unique.  View B shows that it has a different color for the front panel but this panel is a separate piece in View A dress as well.  As a result, you can make this front panel different than the rest of the dress for both views.  Also, you're free to choose whether or not to do the 3/4 sleeves or the full length sleeves for your dress as it is the same pattern, you just choose your cutting line.  The buttons you choose can also make the dress.  You can do something subtle or do something that really stands out.  I just love it all.

You can also purchase this pattern directly from Simplicity here.

Not because this pattern is from the 1940s but I would so go back to the 1940s. My love of the era began by watching movies from the era, but came into full force when I began to watch ‘Land Girls.’ Who would not want to look that stylish while farming. It was such a simple way of life and every women looks gorgeous in outfits from that era, no matter what shape they have. Please please please pick me 🙂

I would zip back to the 1940’s if I had a time machine!
I love the simple styles, the feminine cuts that flattered the curvier figure.
It was a time of war, but it was also a time of tremendous human spirit and courage.

Almost everything I find off the rack nowadays is so uninspiring. Although I’m a busy gal with a full time job and school, I buy fabric without a destination, and patterns with the hope of “someday”. Reading other posts has inspired me to maybe work on this skill a bit more seriously! Knitting needles can go just about everywhere, but clothing crafted by from my own sewing machine could TAKE ME ANYWHERE!

I love these dress tutorials! I am new to dressmaking and getting to see each dress made from start to finish has been a wonderful help. 🙂
