After a person has been sewing for awhile they start feeling brave and maybe they can sew anything, and maybe they'll take a project like athleticwear or want to make a swimsuit. But that sewing bravado can vanish once one tries to sew with spandex. This fabric can be one of the hardest to tackle in the knit family because of two issues: it's both extremely stretchy and it can slippery. This makes the fabric tricky to cut and to sew.
